Josh Lindsey regarded Beth from his seat in the office chair. They were ostensibly discussing a case he was working that she wanted a scoop on, but he was finding it hard to focus. His thoughts kept returning to Mick St. John and what he now knew the man to be, a vampire.

His girlfriend had left him for a vampire.

Josh wondered if he’d ever be able to wrap his head around the literal existence of vampires. It was a dark, mysterious world he’d only glimpsed from the past horror movies he’d taken dates to, counting on their screams of fear as an opportunity to slip an arm around them and be the protector.

He hadn’t been able to protect Beth.

“Josh?!” Beth’s voice cut through his thoughts.

“Huh?” He looked up into her concerned gaze. “Sorry, woolgathering. Can I ask you a question?” he continued before he could lose his nerve.

“Okay,” she responded warily.

“How can you be around them? Really?”

Beth blew out a breath of impatience, not bothering to pretend ignorance of his meaning. “Because I didn’t let preconceived notions cloud my judgment. Look, I get it. Human beings have an atavistic fear of vampires. But it’s like any prejudice based on differences. It doesn’t stand up to reality.”

“All the…blood drinking and everything doesn’t bother you at all?”

“I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you now if I wasn’t for Mick. I’d be dead. As far as I’m concerned, he’s a hero, and I accept him as he is.”

“And the others? The ones you aren’t in love with?” Josh asked bluntly.

“Good and bad, just like humans.”

“But more dangerous.”

“Good thing I have the protection of Mick and Josef, then,” she countered.

Josh sighed. “Maybe I need to talk to someone who didn't accept them from the start.”

Beth seemed surprised and intrigued at the suggestion. “Maybe I can find someone for you to discuss things with,” she told him. “I’ll ask around.”

“Thanks, I’d appreciate it.” It wasn’t like he had a choice. Josh wasn’t stupid; he knew he had to find a way to make peace with his issues. Vampires were part of his reality, and not accepting them was not an option, as Kostan had made abundantly clear.

“Can we get back to discussing the case now?” Beth asked.

“If you think you can convince me to give you inside information, go ahead.”

“I think you’ll find me pretty persuasive,” Beth retorted.

Josh knew only too well the truth of that. All things considered, it was strange that he was so resistant to her arguments regarding vampires. A small inner voice whispered that maybe it had more to do with her marriage to one than any inherent atavism.

“Okay,” he said, forcing those thoughts aside. “Here’s what I know….”
