Characters/Pairing: Amanda/Lee
Summary: Amanda enjoys some free time and reflects on being circumspect

Amanda sat down on a park bench and pulled her lunch out of a bag, digging into leftover meatloaf. It was a beautiful day, sunny and warm, but not too warm; a refreshing breeze made even the lack of shade where she was pleasant. Lee would be out of town for a few hours at a meeting with a contact, leaving Amanda on her own, and the weather had coaxed her out of the office and drawn her to the nearby park.

After her meal, Amanda settled down for a few minutes of people-watching before returning to the Agency. It was a pastime many enjoyed, but only a few could say that developing keen observation skills were also valuable to their job.

A cry caught her attention, and she watched a harried-looking mother tending to her daughter's skinned knee, smiling as she remembered when her boys were that little. She'd rendered first aid to more than a few knees in her time. Time always seems to fly. Philip and Jamie had grown up so quickly that it sometimes made her head spin. She was proud of the young men they were growing into.

Even though her children were older, she and Lee needed to be circumspect with their new relationship. They maintained the pretense that they didn't know where it might lead, but Amanda knew. This was the real thing. Lee was the man she'd been waiting for since her divorce, the one she hadn't realized she needed in her life until recently.

Still, important considerations called for discretion before revealing to the world that they were a couple. The safety of Amanda's family was the top priority for both (which made her love him just a little more). The enemies they fought would only be too willing to use loved ones as leverage against them.

Then there was their professional relationship to consider. Partners being romantically involved was usually taboo, so there was no telling how Billy would react to the news. God knew Dr. Smyth would probably be too happy to split them up. Amanda couldn't imagine not working with Lee. By now, they were a well-oiled team, playing to each other's strengths and knowing the other's moves without being told. Considering how often she'd saved his life by being nearby, she'd be a nervous wreck if deprived of the ability to watch his back. And vice versa, of course.

They were better together, both professionally and personally.

Distracted by her thoughts, Amanda noticed the person who'd arrived when he was sitting down beside her and dropping a paper bag into her lap.

"I figured I'd find you here," Lee told her with a grin.

"You're back early."

Lee sighed. "Yeah, Marty didn't show. I drove all the way out there for nothing."

"Well, you didn't miss much here," Amanda said with a nod towards the family, where the little girl was now happily skipping down the path beside her mom.

Lee nudged her shoulder. "Just you."

Amanda nudged his shoulder in return. "Flatterer." She opened the bag and peered inside.

"I brought dessert."

"I can see that," Amanda responded, pulling out the éclair from their favorite local bakery.

"Does that make up for having to cancel our lunch date?"

"I'll let you know," Amanda said, playfully shoving the éclair into Lee's mouth.

The end
