I'm holding on
I'm holding on to this
The hurt that's in my heart it stays
I can't believe you're gone

-Ghost, Eva Under Fire

All Jack can hear is the silence now.

Ianto wasn't much of a talker (so he said), but god, how the silence now was hard to bear.

To escape it, Jack attended the loudest party he could find, but was unable to take the banal conversations and the meretriciously beautiful people who beckoned with allure but whose beauty hid an emptiness inside.

He tried attending a death-metal rock concert, and afterward, with his ears ringing relentlessly, the silence was somehow even louder.

Noise couldn't mask it, so he tried the opposite.

There was a planet a few galaxies away where they had no vocal cords, and everyone communicated telepathically. Still, his stay left him exhausted from the effort at keeping his shields up. It wouldn't have been fair to burden the sensitive beings with his grief.

He'd found brief respite once while lost on a desert planet. The focus on unquenchable thirst, his skin burning until it felt like it would melt off, on suffering and dying, distracted him. As a bonus, the hallucinations featured Ianto's voice talking to him, keeping him company until his death.

In everything he did now, the silence was his companion.

Silence like a tomb.
