Title: Existential
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Characters: Mrs. Hudson & Mrs. Turner
Notes: I wrote for
sweetandshort about Mrs. Hudson having kind of an existential crisis in a market and overhearing Holmes & Watson saying kind things about her so this is a continuation of that.
Summary: Mrs. Hudson has just the thing for fellow landlady Mrs. Turner's blues.
“Martha, I don’t really see—”
Marie’s friend squeezed her hand to shush her, but Marie only repeated her question in an insistent whisper.
“Martha, how is hiding in a broom cupboard in my own home supposed to lift my mood?”
“When you came to me today and told me how blue you were feeling…”
“Lethargy, apathy, melancholy…”
“Precisely. I recognised the symptoms I myself suffered only a few weeks ago, and I am trying to create the same conditions which helped to alleviate my own distress, to remedy my own, oh, what did the doctor call it, existential crisis.”
“You hid in a broom cupboard?”
“No, not exactly. I was in a market, and I sat down on a crate...”
Marie frowned and looked about them, wishing for a crate, but her friend kept talking.
“…and along came two of my tenants. They didn’t notice me, but I overheard them saying kind things about me and even buying me tokens of appreciation. It was very moving, and it cured me at once. So that’s what we are going to do, hide here and listen for your tenants saying nice things about you. Ah, I heard the door now.”
The landladies listened.
“…the old fusspot’s out…”
“…guess I’ll just help myself…she charges enough, don’t she?...”
“…ought to know her place, always going after me about my boots…”
“…just sweep it under the rug, she’ll won’t notice, nor will the girl, half-wit, but a pretty half-wit, I think I’ll try my luck with…”
Three days later, Mrs. Hudson and Mrs. Turner were strolling down the boardwalk, admiring the waves and licking their ice cream cones.
“You know, Martha, you were right. I feel much better about life. Kicking out all my tenants and taking a seaside holiday was the perfect cure.”
