Summary: It's strange, but it's still perfect.
This was strange. This wasn't like her, not at all. She had always been good at focusing on her studies and on becoming the best, strongest, and most intelligent woman she could be. Her entire life had been about becoming the best she could be, and, even if she never spoke the words aloud, making certain that she didn't make the same mistakes her mother had, or as so many other girls did. Guys were distractions, but...
But there was something special about this one, something she could not deny, something that made her whole world not feel right until she saw his sweet, dimpled smile each and every morning of her life. This wasn't right. It wasn't where she was supposed to be heading. Why then, Jessie asked herself, did it feel so right that AC Slater was becoming such an existential part of her life. Nothing felt right anymore until she saw that sweet smile of his aimed right at her.
She'd never been like this with a guy before, and always sworn she would not be. Yet the last thing on her mind each night was not arithmetic or chemical formulas, unless she fell asleep, as she had always been wont to do, in her books. Regardless, her very first thought every morning, before her eyes ever opened, was of him, wondering if he was awake yet, working at the gym yet, thinking of her yet...
And every morning when she blazed through these doors, she was not at all disappointed to see him look straight in her direction and grin wide. He was never more handsome than he was smiling, genuinely happy, and she seemed, of all those around them, to be able to make him smile the easiest. She knew there was a lonely, little boy still deep within Slater, a boy so weary of always being dragged everywhere, from base to base, to appease his father, the General. If she had anything to say about it, he would never be whisked away again without his permission, but they were still only teenagers, teenagers with a bright, wide future ahead of them.
She'd always believed her own future would be bright. It was part of the reason she worked so hard. She would not succumb to anything that kept other kids her age from completing school or building a wonderful career. Lately, however, she'd began to think of building other avenues in her life. She couldn't put into words how Slater made her feel, not yet at least, but more and more, she was coming to focus on her time with him rather than her future, and she was beginning to wonder if maybe her future would not be as lonely as her childhood had been for when she'd been focused always on better grades and improving herself, and all the kids around her had been more focused on playing, dating, and otherwise fitting in to society, there had been many, many times when Jessie had felt quite alone.
Those times all seemed to be far pass her now. She was no longer alone, with nothing but a powerful education and a promising career to which to look forward. Every day, she looked forward to coming to school, which she always had, but it was for very different reasons now.
"Hey, Momma!"
Everyone in the hallway saw the way those two looked at each other for it was not just Slater who lit up, his whole face glowing with joy, when he saw Jessie. She reacted the same, all thoughts of tests and grades going momentarily out of her mind. None of their friends had ever seen them look so happy. Slater tossed his football to Zack as he walked up to his favorite person and surrounded her slender frame with his muscular, tanned arms. He wasn't the type she would have thought she'd fall for, but then she also wasn't the type that normally attracted him. She was so very much more. Nobody had ever made him feel like she did, and nobody ever would again. There was only one Jessica Spano.
"Good morning, Poppa!" She shined as she almost sang the words and quickly pressed her lips to his. They had a long ways to go still, Slater knew, but for now, his life was complete perfection. Jessie melted into his arms, recognizing both that she didn't have to be so completely focused always on her future and perhaps it was okay for another person to become existential to that very future. After all, her present was pretty well perfect right now.
"Girl," Lisa muttered to Kelly, looking at the way Jessie leaned into Slater, "she's even got her boot up!"
Kelly laughed and smiled. "Leave them alone, Lisa. They're happy, they're in love, and that's all that matters! Isn't it, Zack?" she asked, kissing her own boyfriend.
Jessie heard the cheerleader's voice from what felt like far away, but for once, she had to agree with the friendly pom-pom Queen. All that mattered, at least for now, was that she had Slater and they loved each other, and yeah, with that in her mind, her present life was pretty well perfect.
