Every little girl had big dreams, Fiona thought as she rocked her sick baby. The other two were fine and gurgling happily on the floor with their father and Puss, who had stopped in for a visit. Fiona knew the outlaw was probably hiding from something, or someone, but she and Shrek were glad for the company nonetheless. She didn't miss the castle, but there were times when they felt lonely. Donkey and Dragon hardly ever came by any more, what with charges of their own, and her husband's temper had a tendency to keep away any visitors who might have otherwise stopped in.

Fiona sighed and continued to rock the cradle. Puss was actually offering to cook dinner. For one moment, she considered reminding him that although they might be Ogres, they did not eat mice, but then she heard mention of some kind of creme de la egg that the bandit felt certain even her smallest baby would devour. She smiled at him gratefully, but there must have been a sadness in her eyes for Puss swept his feathered cap off of his head, bowed low, and scampered away.

Shrek was uncharacteristically quiet as he came up behind her. "I'm... sorry if this isn't the life you wanted," he spoke humbly.

"What?" she asked, whirling and blinking in surprise.

Shrek's massive shoulders were scooped. If she was honest with herself, they both knew this was not the life she had imagined. She had always dreamed of a Prince coming to rescue her from that dreadful tower. Even by the time Shrek had at last arrived, in the guise of a Prince instead of his true, Ogre self, she had determined that no Prince was coming and she could, and would, rescue herself. She certainly hadn't needed any olive green, odious Giant sweeping into her rescue, but then more unexpected events had befallen her. Her father was not what she had thought he was, and neither, for that matter, was she. A Prince couldn't cure what was wrong with her, not then or now.

"You're... You're right," she said with a sigh. She shook her head. "It's not the life I wanted growing up. I fear it won't be the life our babies want." Her heart hurt at the pain she witnessed in her husband's large and watery eyes. "But you know... I've known loads of Princesses who never have the kind of love we have."

"You know I love you. I may not always be able to show it all that well -- "

"I know," she said, moving away from the cradle and taking his hands into hers. She gently and lovingly squeezed his hands. "I know you're not always great at showing it. Neither am I. But this isn't a fairy tale, Shrek. This is real life, and True Love, the kind they talk about in fairy tales, doesn't usually happen. Princes are usually too lazy to do much, and there's very little love in most royal marriages. Our life may be far from ideal. You might not have been what I imagined all those years ago. But you have been far better to me than any ordinary Prince ever would have been, and not just because of the way I look." She shrugged a shoulder and again shook her head.

"What we have here," she said, stepping even closer to her loving husband, "is a fairy tale. We're not hindered by the outside world. Yeah, we have to go back to the castle every so often, but for the most part, we get to live our lives as we choose to live them. I don't know of any other Princess, or Prince, who can say that, or who are loved as much as we are by each other. I don't care what others think. And yeah, maybe, sometimes we get lonely..." She was still a Princess after all and had dreamed, once, of the parties she would throw when she finally escaped that castle and the isolation therein. "...but we have each other and our love and that's what matters the most."

Shrek opened his mouth to reply, but before he could, a knock came upon their door. He grinned at the familiar, rasping sound which they both recognized as a hoof rather than a hand. "Come in, Donkey."

"Donkey?" Fiona asked in surprise, but sure enough, it was Donkey who came striding into their little cottage followed by his children. She could see one of Dragon's massive, purple wings behind him. The Three Blind Mice came in without even bothering to knock. Others, too, were coming, causing Fiona to smile expectantly up at her husband. "What have you done?" she asked, to which he grinned wide.

"I knew you were lonely," he said, even as Dwarves began to stumble into their home.

"You hate company," Fiona remarked in growing surprise.

"Yes," he admitted, squeezing her hands this time, "but I hate you being sad more."

"Where's the Scrabble game?" she heard Donkey asking.

"Forget that!" Gingy exclaimed.

"Yeah, nobody can beat you at Scrabble anyway," a Dwarf groused.

"Where's the food?" Gingy asked. "I heard we were having creme de la eggs and -- "

"Sausage, pork, bacon! Where's the meat?!" the wolf demanded, licking his chops as one of the little pigs squealed and was instantly reassured by the other two.

"Your friends," Shrek said, inclining his head to Fiona. "Your headache."

"But -- "

He shrugged. "I just wanted you to be happy."

Her heart swelled with love, as he yet again surrendered his own desires for hers. "Thank you," she said and pressed her lips to his. He may not have been the man she'd imagined rescuing her and marrying, but he was far, far better. The love he gave her, everything he gave her on an almost daily basis, was far more than any other Prince would have ever surrendered for his bride. "I'm so lucky to have you!" She kissed him again.

"Don't forget it!"
