"Close your eyes," she whispered and kissed his temple. She knew this was the only way, the only way to freedom, to being healthy again, and happy. There was no other alternative except continuing the struggle, and they had both confessed to each other that they only wanted the endless struggle to end. She had watched him go for a glowing, healthy man to a skeleton on which torn, dirty, and bleeding flesh hung. She herself could feel her bones, traced her ribs every night while suffering through the uhtceare.
There was no end, but she could give them one. She could end them both. Their god wouldn't care. Their god welcomed freedom, ending one's pain. He wanted them to be free, to be happy and healthy again. This was the only way. "I love you," she whispered and, closing her own eyes, pulled the trigger twice.
She'd always been an excellent markswoman, and tonight was no different. Two squeezes of the trigger, two red-hot bullets, two lives ended, two souls freed, two bodies that, many centuries later, would be dug up together by archeologists. Their bones would have to be carefully pieced together, making a love story for eons.
