Summary: Charley sees more than they think, and her heart aches for them.

She watched, from the other side of the garage, as Modo tentatively flexed his metallic arm. He had been spending extra care with it ever since the last run-in with Limburger when he'd almost gotten what had been supposed to be a newer, fancier arm. She wondered what kind of pain he'd gone through, just what the war on their home planet had made him suffer.

Slapping her oil rag over her shoulder, Charley looked around her garage. Every inch of it was filled with memories with her father. From an early age, Charley had known she'd end up running her dad's shop, but she had not expected to be the only one left of her family. Modo, Vinnie, and Throttle were the only three left of their entire world. She could not imagine what that must feel like, and as she watched Modo carefully shining his arm with an oil rag, she couldn't help but to feel for the poor guy.

He carried himself with such bravado, but she'd also witnessed how, when he walked away from women who were swooning over him, he also gingerly touched his arm. She knew that look, had seen it on her own dad before. He felt like he had very little to offer any woman, because of the parts missing from the one side of his body. Those unilateral injuries didn't damage his appearance in the slightest -- they didn't make him any less cuter or, God help her, sexier. She knew what those women felt when they were swooning over him, because she herself was tempted every day to swoon over these mice. Of course, if she ever picked one, the other two would be crushed, and beyond that, just how would their anatomy work together?

But Modo was still so damn cute! They all were, but the others didn't seem to hurt like he did. She'd watched Vinnie with his mask, and sometimes she knew he was hurting. She also recognized that, like his brother, part of his bravado was to make up for what he felt like he was lacking. Despite their looks, despite their injuries from a war that had left permanent marks on both their bodies and souls, Charley knew these three men were far better than any other man, other than her dear, old dad, she had ever encountered before.

Leaving the rag on her bike, Charley moved over to where Modo was sliding his oil rag over his arm, flexing occasionally to make sure the lubrication was taking right. "You're beautiful," she said, remembering moments from long ago when she'd been just a little girl with her dad, "just the way you are." She kissed his cheek and then walked away before either of them could become emotional.

She could feel his eyes on her, however, as she moved away and felt his blush even from the distance increasing between them. She smiled and blew another kiss, this one to a framed picture of her dad.

The End
