Summary: Something's beginning to change for Cory Matthews...

Cory's eyes glazed over as his teacher kept droning on in his didactic voice. No one could make the subjects come alive like Mister Feeny, especially history, but he just simply could not seem to concentrate today, especially not with Topanga Lawrence sitting right in front of him. Spring was in the air, and something strange was happening to Cory. He'd always thought Topanga's hair was pretty, but never before had it seemed so beautiful, like it could outshine and outsparkle the brightest beam of sunlight streaming in through their classroom window.

"Mister Matthews?" Shawn snickered behind Cory and kicked the back of his desk, making him jump even more so.

"Hum, George Washington? John Adams?" He raked his mind, but the answer had to be one of the two!

Feeny grinned at him, his old eyes sparkling like a predator; Cory felt every bit the mouse that was about to be swept down upon and gobbled up as his teacher's mustache twitched. "That might be a very good answer, Mister Matthews, if this wasn't Algebra!" The whole class jumped when Feeny smacked the blackboard with his yardstick. "Now would you like to come up here, Mister Matthews, and show us why the answer isn't one of our illustrious founding fathers?"

Cory gulped. Almost everybody was laughing at him, but in the midst of it all, Topanga bravely raised her hand. "Miss Lawrence?" Feeny looked over his nose at her. "Do you have something to add to Mister Matthews' impending juvenile delinquencies?"

Cory sighed. He wished she would add something to his "impending juvenile delinquencies", whatever that might actually mean, but he knew he would never be smart or rich enough to earn her attention! He frowned suddenly, wondering why she was standing up.

"Actually, Mister Feeny, if it's okay, I'd like to try my hand at the board. You know, just to, hum, make sure I understand these formulas correctly? It's good practice for the test, and I'm sure you're going to have a test soon -- "

"Absolutely, Miss Lawrence, you may." Feeny tapped the blackboard again. "And what an excellent idea! All your classmates seem much more interested in what's happening outside the window today. If you can complete this problem successfully, they can wait until tomorrow for their test. If not -- "

The whole class groaned.

"Get it right, Lawrence!" Minkus called. "As if a girl ever gets anything right," he muttered audibly underneath his breath.

"She'll get it right!" Shawn shot back at him.

"Would you like to put -- " Minkus, faced by Mister Feeny's cruelest glower, instantly stopped. "We'll see -- "

"She'll get it right," Cory intoned without looking at either of them. His eyes were glued on Topanga's back, on the way her long, blonde hair shimmered down her straight body and the way her long dress curved around that body. He gulped and shifted in his seat. He felt funny, but it was a good, warm feeling. "She gets everything right." Which, unfortunately for him, meant never looking at him for he had nothing to offer her, or any girl.

Why, he wondered, was he suddenly wanting to have something to offer any girl? Girls were trouble. Why, just look at how silly his big brother, Eric, acted over them! But as he watched Topanga's dress swirl around her as she completed the arithmetic problem, he felt almost as silly as Eric so often acted.

Topanga eventually turned again to face their teacher once more and offered him back his chalk. "Did I get it right, Mister Feeny?"

"You did indeed, Miss Lawrence," he said with a shake of his gray head. "You did indeed."

She returned to her seat amongst applause.

Feeny scowled. "Oh, settle down! You're still having your test tomorrow!" he declared, not stating that that had always been his intention. He had known the entire time that Topanga would save little Cory Matthews and had a very distinct feeling that this would prove to be only the first of many times to come.

Glancing at the boy, he sighed inwardly. The lad was already lost, his fingers making kneading motions in the air with his attention fixated on the girl's hair. Ah, well, every little boy went through that feminine spell at some point. He himself had many times, and had again not too long ago with his own wife, not that the children weren't very far from ever being able to be married. That would be the day, he thought, with a smirk, when Topanga Lawrence, the girl with brains and beauty that far outweighed the rest of her class, fell for the lazy buffoon Cory Matthews. At least the boy didn't throw spiders or spitballs in her hair. Stranger things had also happened, such as his own wife falling for him.
