“Why are we here again?” Josef asked, pushing his sunglasses further up and fanning himself with the business section of the L.A Times.
There was a slight breeze blowing through the palms and puffy clouds floating in the deep blue sky. And sun. There was a lot of sun, although the veranda was a sanctuary of shade.
Shane inclined his head to indicate Sara and Beth, apricating on beach towels down by the surf. “So that our women can enjoy the human perks of their vacation. Remember?”
Mick raised an eyebrow. “Our women? I dare you to let Beth hear you say that,” he told Shane with a grin. In fact, he’d pay good money to see it and place a heavy bet on Beth.
Shane shrugged. “What, they’re not men, are they?”
“They most certainly are not,” Josef said in a tone that made both vamps turn their attention to the beach, where the ladies were helping each other put suntan lotion on hard-to-reach areas.
Mick grabbed Josef’s paper and whacked him in the face with it. “Have you no shame?!”
Josef blinked, glanced at Shane, then back at Mick again. “Is that a rhetorical question?”
“Either that or the heat’s getting to him, Mick; best go inside and cool off.”
“Just sayin’. That better not be Beth you’re ogling.”
Josef scoffed. “Like I don’t have more than I can handle with these two.” He pointed a finger at Shane, who was about to make a wisecrack or suggestive quip by the look on his face. “Don’t say it!”
“So, are you ever gonna tell us where we are?” Mick asked.
The villa they were staying in was lavishly appointed and vamp friendly, exactly what you would expect from Josef, who’d set up the vacation. They were in an undisclosed location; only Josef knew where the island was. He’d even blindfolded them and flown them over himself.
“Let’s just say an associate arranged it.”
“Who’s the associate?” Mick, ever the private eye, inquired.
Josef shook his head. “See, if I told you that, I’d have to kill you.”
Mick put his hands up in supplication. “All right, Mr. Imperious, have it your way.”
“I always do,” Josef commented, standing up. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s definitely past time to retreat into the blessed darkness.
“Yes, please,” Shane agreed, pulling his hat down lower over the face and casting a baleful eye at the offending sun above. He rose to follow Josef inside.
Later, after everyone had rested and the sun was but a memory, the five of them would enjoy the darkness together, swimming in the still-warm ocean under a sky of a million glittering stars unobstructed by city lights. There would be romantic walks on the beach and stealing away to secluded spots for lovemaking.
But for now, only Mick remained on the veranda, keeping watch over Beth and Sara, ever the dark guardian angel.

Note: For those that are interested in such things: After I’d written the last line, angel, I went back to the beginning to title the fic. I thought it should have something to do with the sea, and Angelsea came to my mind since it’s one of my favorite Cat Stevens songs. I put the song on while editing. I read that the song is about the sea. It seemed to fit. So I slapped some lyrics on it because I love using lyrics, and it became Angelsea.
