Title: Surviving
Fandom: Torchwood
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG
Characters: Ianto
Words: 200
Summary: Sometimes surviving means just hanging on for another day
It was hard to remember a time when the pain wasn’t all he knew.
Ianto realized on a theoretical level that there had been a time when life was good and he was happy, but all he knew now was that he was drowning in loss and grief. If he dared forget for a moment, the voice inside his head would remind him, vituperating him on an endless loop, berating him for being a failure and sounding suspiciously like his father. He’d been powerless to stop the fall of Torchwood One, unable to save Lisa from being partially converted. He’d nearly gotten the Cardiff team killed, and could have caused the destruction of the planet with his inability to realize that Lisa had been beyond saving.
Somehow, through it all, there was another little voice, nearly drowned out, but not quite. Not quite. This one told Ianto he was a survivor and just like all the struggles that had come before, he could get through this, too. That it would get better, eventually, if he just hung on.
Maybe he could make amends if he continued working for Torchwood. Help save the world, and perhaps he could save himself, too.
