Title: If You Were Home
Fandom: Scarecrow and Mrs. King
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: G
Words: 648
Characters/Pairings: Lee, Amanda, random OMC
Summary: Amanda’s unique skills get them out of another tight spot, then it gets serious and they discuss family.
Notes: This sort of ignores a bit of canon, although only those who remember the eps well would notice. Consider it canon-divergent if you wish.
Lee pulled Amanda behind a potted plant, trusting the shadows in the corner of the room to conceal them. He peered at the KGB agent standing by the door. "Amanda, do you think you can distract him for me? I've got to get into that office and photograph the missile plans."
"You can count on me, Lee," she answered, striding forward with the pretense of confidence.
The man regarded Amanda with guarded suspicion when she approached, but she didn't let that shake her determination.
"Excuse me, sir, do you have the time?"
His visage relaxed slightly, seeing not a threat but a middle-class housewife in front of them. "It's a quarter to two," he said in a heavy accent.
"Thank you!" Amanda took his wrist, making a show of looking at his timepiece. "Oh, that's a lovely watch. It reminds me of the one I bought my ex-husband; do you know the ungrateful jerk never even wore it? Would it have killed him to dress up his wardrobe once in a while? Jeans and sweatshirts are not the marks of success. Don't get me wrong; he's a good man and a wonderful father… well, if I'm honest, he doesn't see much of the boys, but his work takes him away. Mind you, I'm busy too, but I find time for my family, but then I'm the mother; it's expected of us, isn't it?" She whipped her wallet out of her purse, shoving a photo under his nose. "This is Phillip and Jamie; they're my sons."
"Uh, lovely family," the man responded, uncertain and overwhelmed by the verbal onslaught.
"Thank you, they're wonderful boys. Rambunctious sometimes, but you know how boys get. It's quite a handful raising two of them!"
"I'm sure it is."
The man's eyes were glazing over when Lee finally reappeared, coat off and over his arm, top two buttons of his shirt undone, hair tousled, all to appear more like an average guy than a sophisticated spy.
"There you are, Midge!" he greeted Amanda. "C'mon now, we're going to be late again!"
"Right, sorry, I lost track of the time again. Excuse us, and thank you," Amanda said politely as Lee led her away from the area.
"Midge?" Amanda said when they were out of earshot, affronted.
Lee shrugged. "I needed something harmless sounding."
"Do I look like a Midge?!"
Lee shook his head in exasperation and changed the subject. "I never thought I'd be happy for your loquacious tendencies," he admitted as they stepped out of the building into the afternoon sunshine.
"I think I tend to be more rambling than articulate, but I'll take that as a compliment."
Lee glanced at her in inquiry.
"I won an award for vocabulary in school," she explained.
"Why am I not surprised?" Lee asked rhetorically, giving her his patented 'what am I going to do with you' look.
"Because nothing I do surprises you," Amanda responded, smiling and slipping her arm through his.
"Ain't that the truth."
They were in the car and headed back to IFF before Lee spoke again. "Is it true that Joe doesn't spend much time with the boys?" he asked quietly, shooting her a glance.
Amanda sighed. "His job… it's complicated."
"I didn't mean to pry."
"It's fine. It's just that Joe's out of the country a lot, working with the EOA. He doesn't get here very often."
"If it was me…" Lee trailed off.
"If it was you, what?" Amanda asked when he didn't continue.
"I wouldn't want to miss a second. But I probably would," Lee admitted self-deprecatingly.
"You'd make a great father," Amanda told him, keeping her eyes on the scenery outside her window.
"I'm away a lot, too."
"But you always come home."
Back at IFF, Lee paused outside before joining Amanda inside the building.
"If you were home, I would,” he told the closed door.
