#043 Alacrity - Scarecrow & Mrs. King - Always Prepared

Summary: Capture, banter, escape. Just another day for a spy and his inexperienced but enthusiastic partner.
“The alacrity with which you jump into these assignments concerns me,” Scarecrow told Amanda as they found themselves in another tight spot. Literally.
“Oh, Lee…”
“Don’t you oh Lee me,” he warned.
“You’d think you’d be happy to have the help,” Amanda pronounced, wiggling in her chair in a quest to get more comfortable.
“It’s not that I don’t appreciate your dedication to helping your country,” Lee said, tugging at the ropes binding them together. “But you could be safe at home right now instead of here tied up with me and about to be killed by Russian agents.”
“Are you worried about me?”
“Yes. I mean, no! I mean, you’re a civilian; you don’t have the experience or training for this.”
“This is experience. This is me getting experience,” Amanda pointed out, letting Lee tug her arms closer in his struggle to get the ropes untied. Their captors had shoved them into back-to-back chairs and tied them together, making escaping a challenge.
“Oh! I just remembered; I have a pocketknife in my pocket.”
“You’re kidding.” Lee immediately began maneuvering so that he could reach it. “Not that I’m not grateful for you being prepared, but what is a PTA mother doing with a knife in her pocket?”
“It’s not mine; it’s Jamie’s. He’s trying to get his Scout merit badge in knot tying. But he’s not very good at it, poor boy, so he ends up with a lot of knots, well, not the kind he needs, just the kind that are all tangled, so we were using the knife to cut the ropes….” Amanda broke off, surprised that Lee was already free of the bonds and standing in front of her.
Lee took Amanda’s hand and pulled her to her feet. “Less talking, more escaping."
“So rude,” Amanda muttered as they headed quickly but stealthily toward the exit.
