Summary: Cheng Xiaoshi is sick, but luckily his friends have his back.
Cheng Xiaoshi never thought that, of all the dangers and unexpected things he'd encountered over the course of his “job”, the one that would knock him on his ass for a whole week would be a simple case of tonsillitis.
“I told you to be careful of the cold.” Lu Guang chided as he brought the cup of warm water to his bedside.
“Shuddup.” Cheng Xiaoshi could feel each word claw its way out of his throat, but couldn’t help talking back.
“Why? Don’t like hearing an ‘I told you so’?” Even though he was being a little harsh with his words, Lu Guang still dutifully helped his friend down half the cup of warm water before putting it back by the desk.
With a slight feeling of relief washing down his throat, Cheng Xiaoshi continued speaking more freely, “Don’t get all smug, what, you can tell the future now too?”
“I don’t need powers of prognostication to know that walking to the bakery across town, during a snowstorm, would lead to you getting sick.” He stated, “But I’ll give it to you, I was wrong about one thing.”
“What?” Cheng Xiaoshi almost couldn’t believe his ears; Lu Guang, admitting he was wrong?
“I said you were going to catch a cold, but it seems I underestimated your ability to make things worse for yourself.” He stifled a laugh.
“You—” A painful coughing fit cut off the rest of his words and he lay back down on his bed, defeated.
At that moment, a cheery voice hurried towards them.
“Xiaoshi, Lu Guang told me you were sick!” Qiao Ling rushed into the room holding several plastic bags.
Cheng Xiaoshi could only let out a feeble grunt in response.
“Here, I brought soup, electrolyte water, a few herbal remedies,” Qiao Ling spoke as she pulled out a variety of thermos and containers out of the bags and spread them out on the desk near his bed, “Some congee, fruit, soothing tea—”
“And just when are you going to give this all to him? I thought you were busy?” Lu Guang interrupted.
“I was hoping you would do it.” She smiled sweetly at him, knowing full well she wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Feeling his nursing responsibilities had just become ten times more onerous, Lu Guang simply sighed, “I have stuff to do too, you know?”
“I know, but…” Qiao Ling lowered her voice as she turned to look at Cheng Xiaoshi, who was laying back on his pillow with his eyes closed, seemingly not paying attention to their conversation, “I don’t want to leave him all alone.”
Alone. Without them, he would have no one to care for him, no one to make sure he had enough to drink, that he was still eating, that his symptoms didn’t get worse overnight. Cheng Xiaoshi was an adult, of course, and he could do all those things by himself, but… The few words of complaint Lu Guang still wanted to speak died in his throat, and he simply nodded, “Okay. But you better come take over when you’re free.”
“I will!” Qiao Ling lit up again, then looked at her buzzing phone, “Crap, gotta go, see you later guys!” And with that, she rushed out of the room just as quickly as she had rushed in.
As the room fell silent for what felt like the first time in a long time, the only sound that could be heard was the faint ticking of the clock on the wall Cheng Xiaoshi’s slightly laboured breathing.
Lu Guang reached out a hand and placed it on his forehead, frowning at the temperature, “I think you have a fever.”
Cheng Xiaoshi just groaned, and Lu Guang couldn’t be sure if it was in response to what he had said or to something in his dreams.
“I’ll go grab a towel,” Lu Guang patted his slightly sweaty hair and got up to the bathroom.
He was undoubtedly going to have a very busy week, but hey, that’s what friends were for.
