Title: A Mother's Prerogative
Fandom: Saved by the Bell
Author: Apache Firecat
Rating: G/K
Word Count: 500
Characters/Pairings: Slater/Jessie, Jamie
Warnings: None
Summary: In which a feminist's prerogative changes into a longing mother's prerogative.
She had always thought it was her prerogative to be a hard, strong woman who needed no man. Yet her heart had broken so many times over the years as she had watched her son grow up essentially without a father or without any strong, good male role model. She herself had never had a strong male in her past. She had always seen how weak her father was and never stopped to consider that perhaps some men did not have it easy.
Now she stood inside the doorway of the gymnasium, watching her son shoot, and miss, one hoop after another. He did not even seem to know she was there, but even if she made her presence known, what could she possibly say to ease his pain? He had done nothing wrong, yet he had had his heart trod upon. Perhaps it wasn't just the women who were bullied by the opposite sex, at least not any more, perhaps not ever, she thought...
She had had two good men step into her life throughout her years. Two earnestly good men who had tried to reach her. Belding had been hurt by his wife on many occasions. She'd even caught him crying once or twice, and the pride he'd taken in her had meant something. He had perhaps been the closest thing to a good father role model she had had.
The other, she had given her heart to, but life had insisted they break apart. As she watched Jamie, and remembered other events that had happened in this very gym, she couldn't help wondering yet again how different her life might have been had she stayed with Slater. Then, however, she never would have met her husband, and she never would have been able to touch as many lives as she had along the way...
Yet how could she reach her son? How could she touch him without just seeming to be the over-bearing Momma Bear that everyone said she was? For all the good she did reaching children, she could not seem to reach her own son without embarrassing him. Her heart broke repeatedly as she watched him yet her hands also curled into tight fists. She at last understood what Kelly and Lisa had so often said in these very hallways! She'd like to scratch out the eyes of the girl who had broken her baby's heart!
"I've got this one, Momma," a deep voice suddenly said from behind her, "if you'll let me?"
Jessie nodded mutely and watched as A.C. Slater, the only man to whom she'd ever truly, completely given her heart other than her son, walked out onto the basketball court. She watched as he jumped up and hit Jamie's ball, slamming it successfully through the hoop. Then he picked up the same ball, dribbled it for a moment, and shot it at her son. Jamie caught it. The game was on, and soon, both mother and son were smiling through their tears.
