Title: Seizing a Lifetime
Fandom: Torchwood
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: G
Characters/Pairings: Jack/Ianto
Words: 366
Summary: Ianto seizes the day
"It's a bit…disconcerting," Ianto mumbled, squinting as he looked around. The yellow sky glared in a uniquely uncomfortable way he'd never experienced on Earth. It was so different that it threw off his equilibrium. He reached out a hand to steady himself on Jack's shoulder.
"I hope you didn't think all planets would have blue skies like Earth," Jack teased, pulling a pair of sunglasses out of his pocket and handing them to Ianto. "Here, these'll help."
Ianto slipped the glasses on, and immediately the disconcerting sensation eased. He looked around the alien planet with renewed interest.
Despite the situations he'd gotten into, Ianto had never been a carpe diem type of person. Instead, he preferred to plan for what might come, including contingencies for when things didn't go as expected. Forewarned is forearmed was more his motto. Jumping in spontaneously without regard for consequences wasn't his way.
So, he was as surprised as anyone when, without thinking it over, he'd jumped at the chance to visit a different planet when Jack had invited him along. The ship they'd traveled to Xfloria in had come through the rift intact and working, and Jack decided it would be neighborly to try and return it to its owner.
Jack had promised to show Ianto the stars one day, but they'd both known it was a lie, Ianto would never get the opportunity. His days were numbered, but he didn't dwell on that. Now, taking in the new sights around him, Ianto realized that the phrase did apply to him after all. He did live for today. Today was all he had.
Ianto had already done and seen so much he'd crammed several lifetimes' worth of living in a few short years. The day was usually seizing him whether he wanted it to or not.
"We could stay for a bit," Jack suggested. "See the tourist spots. I hear Xfloria has a first-class resort, and I have some universal-standard credits I've never used…."
And just like that, a promise was kept. If Ianto continued to be open to it, perhaps the universe had a few more surprises in store for him after all. Maybe even a lifetime of them.
