What's it all about?
Well, it started like this: We had a vocabulary workbook in school, and each week we'd have to do the exercises. They included writing sentences using each word. I would write them about my favorite fandom characters, and I definitely memorized them better that way! It was a lot of fun. I've been wanting to work on expanding my vocab and I need a bit more structure than just posting to my journal, so I decided to create a community using my favorite subject -- fandom. If it sounds like fun, join in!

What kind of words?
I've scoured the web for lists of college vocabulary words, uncommon but useful words, etc. Most of them will be words that are useful to know rather than rare, old, or obscure words. You may know them already, you may not. I'm dumping them all in a random word generator to choose each week's selection. New prompts will go up on Fridays.

What kind of entries?
1. Single sentences. Use the word/s in a sentence and post them as a comment on the prompt post itself. Even if you're a non-writer, you can join in this way.

2. Short fics of 50-1,000 words that are inspired by the words. Post them as separate entries.

Any rules?
Just a few, and a couple of suggestions. Keep posts here at Dreamwidth rated gen-mature. You are free to post explicit fic at Ao3. Please keep the comment sentences free of explicit or triggering material. Note any warnings or triggers. Any fandom, characters, pairings, genres are welcome. I do suggest using a cut on the longer fic to spare your friends' Reading Pages. You can post directly to the comm, or a link. Feel free to use your fic for any other challenges they fit, if it's allowed in that comm. Kudos for actually using the word in your drabble, but it's not mandatory (it is required in the sentences). There will be no deadlines. Since this is a tool for learning, I decided people should be able to jump in whenever.

I will not allow any hate or racist posts, no attacks or bullying, etc. I don't think that will be a problem here on Dreamwidth, but I wanted to make it clear just in case.

The subject line should include the prompt, fandom, and title

I will take care of new tags. If I should happen to forget or miss a new one needed, just leave a comment letting me know.

Authors will get an author tag when they've used 5 words in fics (multiple words in one fic only count as one). That might be hard for me to keep track of, so if you need a tag, give me a shout.

Does it have to be the precise word or are common derivatives okay - like, iconoclastic, excoriated, etc. ?

Sure, derivatives are fine, for both the drabbles and the sentences.

Reminder that the drabbles can contain the word or not, up to you. Sentences do have to contain some form of the word.

Can I make a suggestion if it's okay? When you/someone posts a new challenge/word, can you add a tag for “new challenge” of something? I’m tracking the community but was so busy this week that the new challenge posts got mixed up with the fill posts. Adding a special tag just for challenge posts means we can track challenges when they get announced.

Of course you can, I welcome suggestions.

Would it help if I added 'challenge' in front of the numbers on the tags? Like:

'challenge: 001 - excoriate'

I think if you had a "challenge" tag by itself that got used only when you posted a new challenge but not on individual entries, that would work. So you could have a new challenge post announced, tagged "challenge, 087 - sacrosanct"

And when someone fills that challenge, it gets tagged with: "087 - sacrosanct"

As long as the tag is only going to get used on your challenge announcements, that works! Like over on sga_saturday I have an "admin" tag that only gets used on announcement posts (almost always new challenges), the challenge tag itself (like "week #336-339: missing") that gets used by everyone, and at the end of a challenge, I use the "admin" tag, the "week #336-339: missing" tag, and a specific end of challenge tag called "roundup".

Hello! Just discovered this place through some posts by m_findlow on my Reading page, and thought I'd check things out. This looks like fun; I remember having done the vocabulary sentence thing back in fifth grade, and writing them into essays and short stories in high school.

I have a quick question. Is there an amnesty period, or can any challenge be answered anytime we feel inspired?

Remind me, please -- how strict are we on the word limit?

A bit over the limit is fine, but since the limit was already increased to 1,000 I'd say if you're writing anything really longer, you could try and cut it down, or always just post it to your own journal or a fanfic archive. Once when I had a story that was too long, I edited it down to the limit, and then posted the longer version to AO3.

Is it possible to create two different works for a single word? Or can one only create one work per word?

Yes, you absolutely can create as many works for each word as you want. You can also do the opposite and use more than one word for one work, as well.

And in case it wasn't obvious, you can jump in wherever you want, there are no deadlines.
