023: Egregious & 024: Synecdoche - Natsume’s Book of Friends - Seek First to Understand
Title: Seek First to Understand
Fandom: Natsume’s Book of Friends
Author:

Rating: G
Word Count: 496
Summary: Ever since Natori Shuuichi learnt about the Book of Friends, he’s been trying to see things from a different perspective.
“Natsume, are you free this weekend?”
Takashi narrowed his eyes as he stared at Shuuichi, “Is this another exorcist job?”
Shuuichi laughed somewhat sheepishly, “Not entirely, it’s a favour for a friend. His family has a house in the mountains they think is haunted, so he offered to let me use it for a few days if I went to check it out. There’s a few local festivals in the area this time of year, so I figured you might be interested.”
“Festivals?” From his spot in Takashi’s arms, Madara instantly became excited, his fluffy round paws waving frantically in the air, “Will there be food? Drinks? Natsume, we have to go!”
“What will you do if there are yokai in the house?” Takashi probed before giving his answer.
“I can eat them for you!” Madara offered, “Those weaklings will make a fine appetiser before the main course!”
Ignoring the cat’s egregious suggestion, Shuuichi considered his answer for a moment before speaking, “If they pose a threat to the family, then of course I will have to exorcise them, but if they don’t, then I suppose…”
“Is that why you want me to come?” Takashi caught on quickly, “You want me to try doing things my way?”
“Yeah,” A small smile appeared on Shuuichi’s face, “You got me.”
Ever since Shuuichi learnt Takashi had the Book of Friends—no—ever since he even met Takashi, he’d been slightly taken aback by how differently the two of them saw things despite how similar their experiences had been.
The word “friends” on the Book of Friends itself was the perfect synecdoche to represent the way Takashi viewed yokai; out of the hundreds of names in the book, he did not see a single one as a potential threat, but rather a potential bond. Yokai could be many things, but they were Takashi’s friends first and foremost, and Shuuichi had grown to appreciate that about him.
“I’ll go,” Takashi answered after some quiet deliberation.
“Yes!” Madara jumped out of his arms and began prancing around the two of them, excitedly listing all the things he was planning.
Takashi turned to Shuuichi after a few minutes of listening to the cat’s animated rambling and spoke in a soft voice to avoid interrupting, “Natori?”
“Yes?”
He stared at Shuuichi for a moment, watching the dark lizard tattoo on his skin crawl from somewhere below the collar of his shirt to the spot next to his right ear. He knew Shuuichi was worried about him because he trusted yokai too much—and he was right to be, after all, Shuuichi had much more experience than him when it came to dealing with the dangers of yokai—yet he was still trying to see things from his perspective.
“Thank you for trusting me.”
Shuuichi smiled in return, and the three of them continued walking home as they finalised their plans for the weekend.
