Summary: "Has there been any change, yet," he asked, not opening his eyes.

Miroku sat beneath the boughs of a large tree, his eyes closed as he softly chanted a sutra. He'd been at it for the better part of two hours. While he was accustomed to focusing his concentration for lengthy periods, this particular effort was beginning to wear on him.

Not far off, he could hear the gentle shushing of footsteps approaching in the grass. The footfalls came to a halt beside him, as their maker waited patiently.

"Has there been any change, yet," he asked, not opening his eyes.

"I was hoping to ask you the same question," Sango stated, settling down beside him.

Dismayed, Miroku cracked one eye open, taking in the intense, sickly green glow of the shard that he'd been trying to purify.

"Well, that's not surprising," he confessed, letting himself relax. He stretched, feeling the muscles of his back aching from being seated in the same position for so long. "As much as I'd hoped that I could handle matters, it seems as though this jewel shard can only be purified by Kagome's own sacred power. And, until that's taken care of, we can't afford to reunite it with the other shards of the Shikon no Tama that she's found. Take that chance, and it might corrupt the rest."

"Which means that all of her work will have been for nothing. I suppose there's nothing to do but wait it out and hope for the best," Sango concluded.

"Yes..." He let out a sigh. "And I imagine it's likely that she'll continue to eschew our company until the issue is resolved. Not that anyone could blame her for wanting to hide; she did seem somewhat traumatized when the accident occurred."

Kagome stared, aghast, at her reflection in a nearby pail of water. "I can't believe this," she wailed. One hand reached up at one of the furry ears that she now possessed; it twitched in response, and she flinched. "How could this have happened?!"

"What the hell's all the fuss about, anyway," Inuyasha grumbled from where he leaned against the far wall of the hovel they were ensconced in. "For me, this is all normal."

She smacked him hard on the arm. "Well, it's not normal for me," she shouted angrily. "What if I never go back to looking like myself again?! I'll never be able to face anybody back home!"

Inuyasha sighed in disgust, rubbing the spot where she'd struck him. "Will you just relax, already, and quit jumpin' to conclusions? Just wait until sunrise, and you'll be fine. Just like I always am."

Kagome slumped to the floor, trying not to stare again at her reflection. "You'd better be right," she fussed. "It's all your fault, anyway."

"My fault? How is this my fault?!"

"If you hadn't lunged for the jewel shard when I reached for it, just as the new moon rose, I wouldn't be in this condition!"

"I suppose it was also my fault that the shard was jinxed, to begin with," Inuyasha muttered. "Like I had any way of knowing that the demon guarding the jewel shard had put a curse on it minutes before we found it." Hesitantly, he glanced in her direction. "If it makes any difference, you actually look kinda cute like that," he mumbled, not quite under his breath.

Eyes wide, he ducked as the bucket of water was lobbed at his head, the contents splashing him as the wooden bucket itself bounced almost harmlessly against the wall.

"I look what?! That's not helping anything," Kagome yelled. "Wow," she added to herself in a soft groan. "This gives new meaning to the phrase, 'that time of the month'."
