Sighing, she stared listlessly out the window. Billy wasn't coming tonight. Her sisters had finally succeeded in scaring him off or, rather, Winifred had. She should have simply ran away with him when she'd had the chance.

"SARAH!"

She jumped at her elder sister's blood-curdling cry. "I'm right here!" she declared, stamping her feet. She was not supine like Mary, who was still convinced that Winifred had their best interest at heart. She was absolutely convinced that their sister was their heroine, keeping them safe from the villagers, but Sarah knew better. Winifred was keeping them from the lives they deserved, the life she deserved.

She needed to sneak away and go to Billy. If he was not going to come to her, she would go to him, and they could leave. They would have to leave for else Winifred would curse him beyond either of them being able to have any life. It was bad both that Sarah and Mary were cursed, but they had both been born into this unfortunate mess.

"Oh, Billy!" Sarah sighed. Her heart ached, but she would see him tomorrow. Tomorrow, in the sunlight, she would find him, and they'd flee while Winifred slept.

"Sisters, gather round! It's time for children!"

Mary growled playfully. "I'm hungry tonight! We didn't eat enough souls last night!"

Sarah rolled her eyes. This was what her life had become! If only their father could see him now... He had tried so hard to get them to overcome the lives their mother had wanted for them, but Winifred had taken their mother's nastiness to an entirely new level, finding a way to gain strength and very life out of innocent children. At least Sarah could grant them a few moments of complete joy before their deaths, before she and her sisters ate their very souls, but it would do no good to let her sisters know how much she regretted the decisions they had made.

Besides, the townsfolk were so mean to them, and they had killed their mother. It was almost... fitting that they take their children.

"Sarah," Winifred called, blinking owlishly above her cauldron, "are thou not ready?"

"Of course I'm ready!" She flashed a big grin on her face. She needed to find new berries in the woods; she was beginning to run out of paints for her face, masks of beauty and happiness behind which to hide. She was only truly happy with Billy, but her sisters would never understand. If she told them what she really thought of everything, and despite how dumb they thought her, she had plenty of thoughts on everything, it would spell Billy's death, if not her own as well. She'd rather die than see him killed, especially knowing the cruelty with which Winifred would make him suffer.

She made herself seem bright and cheery as she hopped up and down. "Of course I'm ready, Winnie!" She clapped her hands together with glee. "I'm always ready to fly amok!"

The End
