Summary: Lionel and Jean, after all this time.
She never imagined they would be standing here.
Lionel had called this place home or, at least, as close as he could get to that nowadays. It reminded him of family, he’d said, of comfort, love—and yet, as Jean watched him look out across the river, his usual stoic expression did little to illustrate any of the feelings he’d previously described. He just observed.
Still, Jean smiled as the moon shone down over the Danube. She never imagined they would be standing here, together, after everything that happened—but God had worked His miracles, and He’d given them both a second chance.
Was he thinking the same? Or was he wondering if it was all real, as he had done when they’d reunited? Did he still think her a cruel vision sent to remind him of what he’d lost, to consume him in her madness?
She looked at him out of the corner of her eye, then slowly brought the back of her hand to bump against his, where it hung by his side.
‘Touch me, I am real.’
Without turning or changing his expression, Lionel clasped his hand around hers.
Above, the bright silver moon; below, the glittering river.
Standing hand in hand, returned to Orsova.
