threesentenceficathonSpoilers through the end of the fourth season at least, and canon divergent.
Sonny wandered unfamiliar surroundings, shrouded in a hazy white mist, for what seemed like forever, occasionally bumping into figures who appeared to be doing the same. Disturbingly, he realized that he didn't know where he was or how he'd ended up there. An edge of fear began creeping slowly into his soul as he realized he recognized some of the people who drifted past… the problem was, they were all supposed to be dead. Their former Lieutenant Lou Rodriguez, teammate Larry Zito, Sonny's partner Eddie, his wife Caitlin (with a small, wrapped bundle in her arms that he dared not look at for fear of what he knew he would find), and Rico's Angelina, Jesus... he even recognized Rico's brother Rafael from photos he'd seen...
What the hell is going on here?! Am I dreaming?
As if summoned by the questions, Angelina Madeira appeared before him, blocking his path and looking like a beautiful, righteous Goddess, her hands on the hips of her flowing gown. He could do nothing but stare.
"Rico loves you, and you wouldn't be here if you didn't love him too, so why are you hurting him with that love?" she asked accusingly.
Hearing the truth so bluntly stated by a ghost left Sonny with no defense. He found himself hanging his head in shame and regret.
That appeared to be enough answer for Angelina. "They need you – go and be with them."
Sonny barely had time to utter a growled, "I'd be glad to, if I knew how the hell to get out of here," when, in the blink of an eye, he found himself in a dirty alley, covered in blood.

The blood staining Sonny's hands wasn't his blood. The shock of that knowledge slammed into him like a freight train with nothing to demarcate the line between one realm and the other, revealing his partner, Rico, sprawled on the ground and himself frantically putting pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding.
"You saw them too," Rico managed through a wet cough, "Angelina…"
The implication that they'd shared the same… vision of the dead…sent a chill through Sonny's already shaking body. He pulled Rico closer, relieved to hear ambulance sirens getting louder. "That's right, partner, and she was right – I love you too, and you're gonna pull through this… I'm in this with you," he echoed words Rico had told him during his confession too long ago. "So we're both getting out of this – you hear me?!" Sonny growled, letting out a relieved breath at the slight nod he received in return.
As he waited for the salvation of paramedics to arrive, Sonny saw the dead in his mind's eye, the ones that were there… and one, he realized with a flash of insight, who stood out because he wasn't there. Ricardo Jr., the son Angelina had given birth to, who had supposedly died in the same explosion that took his mother.
Unlike Caitlin, Angelina was alone, no child in her arms. That could only mean one, world-shattering thing…
(go and be with them)
Sonny knew that he'd move heaven and earth without rest until he'd uncovered the truth, and when he did, he would take Angelina's words to heart. He would be there. No more lies, no pulling away. They were going to face the future side by side, whatever it held.
Sonny leaned over and whispered into Rico's ear. "When you're on your feet again, it looks like we got some detective work to do, partner."
