Summary: "You must have some kind of ulterior motive."
Once again, Babbitt found himself irritated by one of his musical tenants. However, rather than being obnoxious, this particular one was being oddly, and overly, solicitous, as though eager to drown him in adulation.
"What can I do for you, sir," Peter was asking him, hovering wherever Babbitt chose to go. "Can I get you anything?"
"Tork, knock it off," the belligerent landlord gruffed at last. "You're about to drive me up the darned wall, with the way you keep hanging around me! What's gotten into you?!"
Flinching, Peter backed off. His hands kneaded and knotted. "I'm sorry, sir. I just wanted to be on your good side."
"What for? What's behind it all?" He narrowed his eyes, regarding the nervous young man. "You must have some kind of ulterior motive."
"Well, I..." Peter tried to give Babbitt a winning smile. "I wouldn't exactly call it an ulterior motive. It's not anything bad; I can promise you that."
"Well, you're certainly up to something. Spit it out, if you're going to, or go home, and quit wasting my time."
Peter swallowed. "My friends and I want to host a Christmas party for the neighbors. And, since the others seem to think that I'm the most diplomatic of us all, I was roped into coming over to try to butter you up. That's all it is, Mister Babbitt, honestly. We're planning to throw a party, and we were worried that you'd be angry about all the noise."
Babbitt regarded his tenant pensively. "Go ahead and throw your party, then, Tork," he finally responded. "I'm not stopping you."
"You..." His eyes going wide, Peter stared at him. "You'll let us?"
"Why not? Believe it or not, young man, I know a thing or two about Christmas spirit. I'll look the other way."
