Title: He's The Watcher
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Author: Apache Firecat
Rating: G/K
Word Count: 500
Characters/Pairings: Giles, Willow/Tara, Anya/Xander
Warnings: None
Summary: Willow and Anya are both watching the same guy.
"You can't emulate him, you know."
Anya's snide remark takes Willow out of nowhere. She's very well aware that there are times when the former vengeance Demon still gets overprotective of her fiancé. She doesn't like it, but she can understand the jealousy since she had, on occasion, felt the same for Tara. She can only imagine what it must feel like for Anya, knowing all of Xander's friends are girls. But why now? She doesn't really give that question any consideration before blurting out, "I wasn't even looking at Xander!"
"No, you weren't." Anya is nonetheless eyeing her warily.
Willow's eyes narrow. "Then what business is it of yours?"
"You can't emulate him," Anya repeats, lifting her chin a little higher as though daring Willow to actually argue with her.
"Why would I want to emulate -- "
"Not Xander," Anya speaks dismissively, cutting the Witch off. "Giles."
The two girls' eyes lock, but before either can speak any further, the very object of their discussion, and admiration, walks across the bookcase behind which Willow has been standing for quite some time now, pretending to pour over books. She hasn't been studying those books, though; her main focus of study has been entirely on him.
Rupert pauses in the ancient book he's reading, trying to learn how best to prepare Buffy for the night's impending battle, and she looks sheepishly up at both the former Demon and current Witch. He is very well aware of how powerful both of these women are and how easily either, if riled to the proper proportions of anger, could destroy the entire world. After all, it was not that very long ago that shy, little Willow almost succeeded in doing that very thing. "Is everything quite all rights?" he asks.
Both quickly duck and nod their heads. "Oh, yes, of course! I was just telling Willow how dusty these books are!" Anya swipes a duster neither Giles nor Willow had noticed previously over the top of the bookcase, sending a wave of dust at the redhead, and then dusts Giles' very nose before sashaying away.
Giles blinks, utterly confused. "What," he asks slowly, "was that all about?" He pins his gaze over his spectacles at Willow, but she has grown far from the shy, little girl she used to be.
She meets his gaze steadily now, something she never would have back in her high school days, and shakes her head. "Women," she offers. A moment later, she's watching him walk away, pleased with the success of her facade. Maybe she can't quite emulate Giles -- nobody can be as brilliant as he is --, but she can certainly try!
A moment later, however, she's questioning herself, and Anya's intentions. She slides closer to her, an open book in her arms, and gradually comments, "Nobody can be as good as he is."
"No, it's like being as cute as Xander. Nobody can."
Satisfied, Willow returns to watching Giles. No, but we can try.
