Title: Emulate
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 221b
Summary: Watson is piqued at a newspaper story.

I snatched up the newspaper with undisguised disgust.

“Watson.”

I registered the soothing tone in Holmes’s voice, but I was in no mood to be soothed.

“I don’t understand how you’re taking these so easily. ‘The New Sherlock Holmes’” I snorted. “What about the old Sherlock Holmes?”

“The old Sherlock Holmes is, well, getting old.”

“But that doesn’t mean…”

“No, but it’s natural for the press to look for a sensational angle, and it’s also natural for younger puzzle-solvers to want to emulate their elders.”

“Elders and betters!”

“You don’t know that.”

“Holmes!”

“These young sleuths, they might be just as good as I was.”

“Are! Just as good as you are!” I tucked the offending headline inside the folds and shoved the newspaper into my case. “On today of all days, it rankles.”

“Everything has a season, Watson.”

“I know that.”

“Every story’s beginning is some other story’s end.”

“I know that, too!” I sighed. “Holmes.”

“We made this decision together. We discussed it for a long time.”

“And it’s the right decision. I feel that. Don’t you?”

“Absolutely. So let’s carry on.”

We spent the next few minutes in silence, saying good-bye to Baker Street for the last time. Then we took a cab to the station and boarded a train for a beginning, one with garden and bees.
