Title: Diatribe
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 200
Summary: Holmes and Watson watch a pair of clowns, but they aren't laughing.
I am willing to wager that Holmes and I were the only ones among the crowd not smiling. Indeed, the laughter, from timid titters to gross guffaws, surrounded us. We were, after all, at the circus. We were among the many spectators to the famous comedic team, the Lorenzo brothers.
The people who filled the stalls had not born witness to a very different scene, some minutes prior to show’s commencement.
Holmes and I had heard the diatribe launched by one brother against the other, dripping with caustic venom, and the other’s equally biter counter claim, revealing the truth about the campaigns which they’d waged for the attention of the shared object of affection.
And ‘object’ was the apt word, for neither treated the young lady as if she were a human being capable of making her own decisions—and being frightened out of her wits.
The crowd laughed at the antics, the acrobatics, the exaggerated expressions, and, of course, the bit with the dog. Holmes didn’t laugh. Neither did I.
I did, however, note the presence of a pair of constables waiting ringside. I looked at Holmes, who nodded and muttered,
“A pair of clowns. Joke’s on them now.”
