halfamoon Day 3, 'Blood, Sweat, and Tears.' A great fest celebrating women characters that's running through February 14th.
Robyn watched as Delilah sparred with Mel, pride swelling in her chest. Dee would be a natural fighter; she had the spirit and determination.
Robyn thought back over the last few months; at first, she hadn't known if she'd be able to forgive them for going behind her back with the training. It didn't take long to realize that Mel was right. Delilah needed to be able to protect herself if the need arose. Because of the world they lived in.
Because of the line of work her mother was in.
"Time out!" Dee called, wiping the sweat from her forehead.
Robyn tossed a scrap of cloth to her daughter with a grin. "Headband. Keeps the sweat out of your eyes."
"Thanks, mom."
Like any mother, Robyn wanted to protect her child. Now, the childhood tears from scrapped knees had given way to nightmares of seeing blood spilled and facing the reality of getting caught up in her mother's dangerous profession. Delilah was nearly grown up now, though. It was time for Mom to step back and allow the chick to stretch her wings and realize her full potential.
There was a word Robyn had learned while on assignment in Greece: Charmolypi. She understood it now in a way she never had back then. It was the joy of watching her little girl become a strong woman, mixed with sadness for the loss of innocence. Having missed so much of Delilah's early years only made it worse.
Still, Robyn was proud. Their family bonds were strong, and together, they'd raised someone who would be a force to reckon with, a woman who would fight for what was right and protect those who needed her. Just like her mother.
Robyn couldn't ask for more than that.
"Loser buys lunch!" she called to them, laughing as the fighting took a more competitive turn.
A little motivation never hurt, either.
