Summary: “Here, I got you those flowers.” Ginko plopped down on the veranda next to Adashino handing him a glass jar filled with small flowers, then taking a moment to shake the travel dust off himself once his hands were free.

“Here, I got you those flowers.” Ginko plopped down on the veranda next to Adashino handing him a glass jar filled with small flowers, then taking a moment to shake the travel dust off himself once his hands were free.

Adashino barely acknowledged his arrival, fully focusing his attention on the jar instead, “These will cure the patients?”

As he spoke, he opened the glass jar and pulled out one of the small bell-shaped flowers and examined it closely, lightly caressing the delicate bone white petals between the pads of his fingers and occasionally twirling it around by its thin green stalk. The flower seemed to almost glow under the sun, but something about it reminded him of a little round snow hut, cold and quiet even as he held it under the light.

“Hmm,” Ginko nodded, pulled out a cigarette, and admired the ocean view from the Doctor’s home as he explained, “The smell of incense made from these flowers should be enough to draw the mushi in those people out, just make sure you put the patients in a well-ventilated room— the mushi are small enough that they’ll be blown away once they’re out in the open.”

“Won’t that expose other people?” Adashino finally turned to look at him with a raised eyebrow.

“Unlikely,” He gave a somewhat insouciant shrug, “These mushi need almost absolute stillness and an enclosed space to be able to successfully change host. I’m telling you, even the smallest breeze will blow them away. They usually live their whole lives cocooned inside the petals of those cave flowers, I’m surprised they made it all the way out to the coast in the first place.”

“They live inside these?” Adashino promptly adjusted the lens he wore over one eye and squinted at the delicate white flower once again, as if by doing so he would be able to catch a glimpse of something inside it.

“Not in these specific ones, obviously.” Ginko laughed slightly.

Adashino put the flower back inside the jar and closed it, clearly disappointed.

“Well,” He stood up and grabbed the jar, “Since you’re already here, do you want to come take a look at the patients? See if there’s anything I might have missed?”

Ginko leaned back against one of the wooden columns that supported the roof over the veranda and closed his eyes, “I trust your abilities, Doctor. Besides, those letters you sent were pretty detailed; I’m confident in my prescription.”

“Tsk.” Adashino clicked his tongue and chided, “You just want to laze around in the shade.”

“Can you blame me? I’ve been travelling all day, I just want to take a nap.” Ginko blew out a puff of smoke to accentuate his words.

“A nap? In this beautiful weather?” He sighed, “At least stay awake long enough to show me what you brought this time.”

At this, Ginko cracked open his eyes and gave him a sideways glance, “Who says I brought you anything?”

“Well, did you?”

“…If the price is right.”

“Hah!” Adashino laughed and finally headed back indoors to prepare the medicine, “You better not be trying to rip me off this time.”

“Me? I would never.”
