Title: Prevaricate
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Length: 300
Rating: Gen
Summary: Sherlock concludes a witness isn't telling the truth.
“So, that was interesting.”
“Yes.”
John closed his notebook. “All right: I’ll bite. What did you think of what the countess had to say, Sherlock?”
“A tissue of lies, John.”
“Really?”
“Prevarication. Evasion. Omission.”
“Interesting. Do you think she really is a countess?”
“Oh, yes, of the first order. That may have been the only whole and complete truth she spoke the whole interview. Let’s go through the most obvious. First, we asked her the name of the maid, the one who also served at table.”
“She said she thought it was Mason.”
“Yes,” said Sherlock. “Not, as we suspect, Fortnum.” He shot John a ‘don’t be an idiot, please’ look.
“Oh, Lord.” John rolled his eyes. “Fortnum and Mason. Why didn’t I see that?”
“Because you’re an idiot. Oh, don’t get insulted.”
“I wasn’t. I’m used to it now.”
“Good. Then we asked her if strawberries were served at tea,” continued Sherlock.
“And she said she was allergic.”
“Evasion! Finally, we asked her if her goddaughter had ever worked at a chemist’s.”
“She said,” John checked his notes, “‘not to her knowledge.’”
“But we didn’t ask her if her goddaughter worked at the pharmacy dispensary of a hospital, did we? And she wasn’t going to volunteer that information, was she? See what I mean? Prevaricate! Evade! Omit!”
“So what are we going to do now? Are we going to go back there and tackle her with the truth?”
“She’s almost a hundred years old. Even I don’t fancy browbeating a relic of empire.” Sherlock sighed. “As much as it pains me to say it—and more it pains me to do it—I am going to have to call in a specialist for dealing with such delicate matters.” Sherlock put his mobile to his ear and grimaced. “Brother Mine?”
Title: Circumspect
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Length: 100
Rating: Gen
Summary: Sherlock doubts a victim is what he appears to be.
“…so by all accounts, our victim was a singularly good guy,” said John reading his notes. “Faithful, circumspect, responsible.
“Yes,” agreed Sherlock, but his tone was laced with incredulity and cynicism.
“You needn’t say it like that, Sherlock. You know there are people in the world who are exactly what they appear to be.”
Sherlock huffed. “I daresay you have a few secret sides to you, John.”
John snorted. “Can I keep a secret anything from you?”
“You can try,” allowed Sherlock.
“Well, I wasn’t thinking of myself. I was thinking of you. You don’t have any secrets.”
“Don’t I?”
