#051 Solipsist - Quantum Leap - More Than Meets the Eye
Title: More Than Meets the Eye
Fandom: Quantum Leap (1989)
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: G
Words: 362
Characters: Al, Sam
Summary: Sometimes looks can be deceiving, but Al knows the real Sam.
Al leaned back in his desk chair, stretching out the kinks in his muscles as he took a break from the tedious report he was writing for the Committee. He wasn't much of an eloquent wordsmith; oh, he could charm anyone face to face, they didn't stand a chance against Calavicci charm, but words on paper were not his forte.
He turned his attention to the other side of the room, where Sam stood at the huge blackboard that took up the entire wall, engrossed in the complicated equations that would hopefully get Project Quantum Leap up and running. Sam's whole world was currently focused on the numbers before him; it's doubtful that even a nuclear explosion would have gotten his attention.
Al smiled fondly, but it dimmed as he recalled the altercation a few hours prior. He'd put a couple of the new junior researchers in their place in no uncertain terms. No one made disparaging remarks about Sam when he was around.
He knew the impression Sam could make. The physicist was shy in social situations and so dedicated to his work that Al often had to force him to take meal breaks. Most of his time was spent locked away working on the project. That and his genius-level I.Q. led some to get the erroneous assumption that Sam was a self-obsessed solipsist who didn't care about anyone else.
That couldn't be further from the truth. Sam was a sensitive soul who cared deeply for others and was always quick to jump in whenever someone was in need. He'd help strangers as quickly as friends and willingly sacrifice himself if that's what it took.
Al worried that one day Sam's altruism would get him into trouble. So, he stayed close and watched, determined to protect Sam to the best of his ability. Sometimes that included chewing out some nozzle who thought they knew who Sam Beckett was. They weren't afraid of the boss, but they were afraid of the Admiral.
"How about a break, kid?" Sam surprised him by turning immediately, giving him an inquiring look. "I'm making spaghetti."
Sam grinned at him. "I thought you'd never ask!"
