Summary: There's no wonder she loves him, even if he can't give her what she truly desires.

It wasn't unusual for Rose Tyler to be kept awake these nights, thinking of the adventures she'd had with the Doctor, the undeniable pull she had felt towards him since almost the first time she had met him, or the various other lives they encountered throughout the galaxy. Her travels with the Doctor had certainly changed her -- she'd like to think for the better, but she feared sometimes, and knew her dear mum did as well, for the worse at times. It was nothing unusual to wake screaming, her heart pounding fearfully in her chest, or for her to be awakened in a sweat of longing, desiring a man who she knew would never be able to love her as she did him.

But tonight, what kept her awake was the latest species they had encountered, an entirely peaceful species who had been wiped from existence. If not for the evil spirit possessing them, taking control of them so easily as it had of the humans, Rose doubted the Ood could have fought their way out of a wet cardboard box. There had been no menace in the creatures. She had come to know very many, strange beings throughout the galaxies, but none came close to being so utterly peaceful as the Ood.

But perhaps they had not truly been that peaceful after all. Could they have known that creature existed? Nah, she thought, flopping over onto her side and tucking her hands underneath her head, they just didn't seem that way, and from what the remaining crew had said, the honors had given them, she couldn't believe that any of those who had known them better could have truly thought that. The Doctor had been upset by their loss as well, but then he grieved for any and all life forms, even the evil ones.

Rose pursed her lips together and then blew out a long, slow sigh as she thought of her days spent around the Ood. They had been more than peaceful. They had been down right... What was the word the Doctor had used once in speaking of their beliefs? Obsequious. They had been so desperate to please others -- not even just to please others, but to serve others. Their joy truly had come from serving those around them.

Rose shook her head, tossed her blonde mane back, and swept her smooth cheeks down her clasped hands. She could not have lived like that. She could never serve another like the Ood had served their entire ship! And from what she'd heard, all Ood had always been like that. She could not imagine ever serving another to the point of never doing anything for oneself. They had not had any form of recreational hobbies or anything, their only thought truly seeming to be how they could help those around them, how they could serve those around them.

Yet again, Rose found herself being thankful that she was a free woman, but yet, as she flipped back onto her back with another weary sigh, she found her thoughts going to the Doctor, and to her relationship with him. She might not exactly serve him, but she was constantly at his beck and call despite knowing that the feeling brewing so strongly inside of her heart would never be what he felt for her. Oh, sure, he liked her, but sex and romance were about the furthest thing from that man's mind. Why, she could have stripped naked in front of him, and she was quite certain that he'd bloody well tell her to put her clothes back on!

Yet that little French strumpet had gotten him to go places and do things with her that he'd never think of doing with Rose herself. Rose sighed again, feeling familiar tears beginning to sting her eyes. There were times, like now, when she almost wished she had never met the Doctor. Almost... But without him, she would have never known all the pleasures and all the horrors across the universe. She would never have truly lived. She would have died a normal, boring, meager girl with a normal, boring life and spent years slaving away in servitude in a stupid shop instead.

But with the Doctor, she was doing things, experiencing worlds and creatures and even sometimes sensations that no ordinary human would ever have. She thought back to her last argument with her mum. Her mother would never understand. No one back on Earth would, although Mikey had at last. He had understood, but even he had felt as though he was serving someone who would never appreciate him. And she wouldn't have. She couldn't have, not with her head full of the Doctor and everything he could give her, every experience he could give her because he was far from being able to give her everything she truly craved.

Rose flopped onto her belly and buried her face into her pillow. One would think that the least a man with a time traveling box could do was to make sure his Companion had the finest of comforts, but of course, he didn't even do that for her. She blew out a breath and lifted her head so that only her chin rested on the thin pillow. What did the Doctor do for her? she blatantly questioned herself.

More, she thought instantly, than any other human on Earth ever could, than any other being ever would. He had shown her things, given her experiences, that she could have never otherwise, not even in her wildest dreams for she would not have known to imagine them. She would have never thought of them if not for him. He had opened her mind, opened her horizons, opened her life in ways no other ever could have. It was no wonder she loved the man, but she would never, ever be actually loved by him in return. At least, she thought, crying herself asleep for yet another night, she would always have the experiences.
