Title: Loquacious
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Length: 200
Rating: Gen
Summary: Post-case. Polly the parrot bests thief and sleuth.
“I can’t believe Sid the Snake, so long a blight on London’s peace, so long a fugitive from justice, was finally bested by a loquacious parrot!” exclaimed Watson.
“A rather ignominious end to a long and illustrious criminal career,” remarked Holmes as their cab rumbled back towards Baker Street. “But good riddance.”
Watson noted the slight wistful note Holmes’ voice. He gave his companion a side glance. “You’re just sore it was Polly that brought him down and not you.”
“No one, as you say,” admitted Holmes, “likes to be bested by a loquacious parrot!”
Watson chuckled. “It’s a lesson in being prepared, knowing all the hazards, even the feathered ones, to your success. If Sid hadn’t dismissed the presence of the bird by Jove, if he’d just had
a cracker in his pocket…”
Holmes nodded. “Then I could have tracked him down—by the crumbs!”
Watson laughed. “All’s well that ends well. The Yardleys’ family heirlooms have been restored to them, and young Maggie Yardley has a new pet of which she is inordinately fond already if my eyes do not deceive.”
“Yes, young Miss Maggie has found a friend who likes to chatter as much as she does!”
