Note: Tissue warning. It made me cry, and I wrote it. Angst with a happy ending.

She can hear the little cries louder now, even though she’s in her car with the windows up and the heat on against the chill of the night. The voice is insider her head, but she’s used to that.

She’s always had ‘the sight’ as her grandmother said, a prognosticator, they called it back in the day. She predicts the future with the help of her Tarot cards, but tonight it’s her spirit guides that are leading her to where she needs to be.

The street is dark and narrow, and she’s so focused on steering her car that she almost misses the small dark form. She pulls the car over and steps out, gazing at the little fawn on the side of the road.

“Momma, wake up!” the distressed deer cries as it stands beside its mother’s body. “Please, wake up mama! I’m scared here all alone! Mama…” It sniffs at its mom’s body, shivering with cold and fear.

“Mama can’t wake up, little one,” she tells the deer with her mind. “She’s gone with the angels.”

“Angels?” the deer looks at the woman, not quite sure it dares to trust, even though she’s projecting love and protection. It looks around, dismayed and confused, not knowing what to do or what will happen now.

“It’s all right, love,” the woman says, holding out her hand for the animal to sniff. It comes closer, slowly, lured by the comforting energy. “You can come with me, and I’ll take care of you.”

“You will be my mommy?” it asks, timidly nuzzling her hand.

“I promise, you’ll be safe and loved with me.”

She bundles the young deer into the car and takes it home to her farm to live for the rest of its life, never again knowing tragedy, only love.
