Summary: Anya learnt something unusual in school today...
When Anya came back home from school, she had a very serious look on her face.
Noticing this, Yor bent down and asked, “What’s the matter Anya? Having trouble at school?”
Anya shook her head firmly, “No. I learnt about carpy deems.”
“What’s that?” Yor didn’t think she’d heard about that before.
“It’s a type of fish,” Anya explained with conviction, “That can kill you at any time! So you have to do whatever you want today, because the carpy deem might grab you tomorrow!” She’d been half dozing off during the lesson, but she was pretty sure she got the main idea.
Brief surprise flashed across Yor’s face. ‘Killer fish? They sound deadlier than piranhas, I don’t think I’ve encountered any before. How do they kill their prey? If they’re so deadly, perhaps with poison? If I can catch one of them, maybe I can use some for assassinations, I heard tribes in the amazon use deadly tree frog poison on their darts when hunting, I bet those carps have poison potent enough to kill a human…’ Her expression, however, returned to normal, “That sounds dangerous! Are you worried about the carps?”
Anya, who just now learnt there were also killer frogs somewhere out there in the world, nodded anxiously.
“There’s no need to worry, Anya, I’ll teach you how to stay safe!” Yor stood up, clapping her hands as she contemplated her next steps, “Let’s see, we could start by setting up some traps!”
“Are we gonna catch the carps?” Anya was already getting excited.
“Yes, we’ll catch them before they get to us! Now let’s gather the materials…”
A few hours later, when Loid finally returned home, what he found in his living room made him wonder if perhaps he’d gone into the wrong house.
The coffee table was turned on its side with chairs from the dining room stacked on top of it in a tower. The couch was also overturned against the wall with its cushions spread out in front of it, in what he could only describe as a makeshift parapet, and when he looked closer, he could see a piece of string running from the side of this structure and connecting it to the coffee table tower.
As he cautiously stepped forward, he became aware of a faint click, and the hair on his nape stood on end.
He jumped back just in the nick of time to avoid a rain of knives falling from the ceiling, as well as what he could swear was a handful of needles shooting out sideways and disappearing into the wall. At the same time, he heard a voice cry out, “Oh no, the carps got papa!”
As Anya yelled, she pulled on the string and the tower of chairs immediately collapsed in Loid’s direction. Instead of avoiding the chairs, he reached forward to catch them, wanting to avoid having to replace his dining room.
“What’s going on?!” He asked as he struggled to place the chairs back on the floor.
“Oh, it’s Loid!” Yor appeared next to him in a second, worriedly helping him with the chairs and looking him over, “Are you alright? I’m so sorry!”
“I’m fine, just, what…?” ‘What the hell is going on here? Are we being attacked? Did they find my home again? I’m sure I wasn’t followed, there’s no way…’
“We were gonna catch the carps!” Anya quickly explained.
“The… carps?”
“The killer carpy deems! The ones that can grab you any day!”
“Anya said she learnt about them in school today,” Yor added, “And she was a little worried, so I offered to help her set up traps.”
“Carpy deems…” Loid had a faint feeling in his heart, “Anya, do you remember how their name is spelled?”
“Um,” Anya thought hard for a second, then ran to her backpack, “I wrote it down! Here!”
Loid took the notebook and looked down at the page. Among the mass of scribbled words and doodles of what looked like fish, he read two words written down in big childlike letters and let out a long, defeated sigh.
Carpe diem.
