#025 Timorous - Doctor Who - Weird Moon Rising
Title: Weird Moon Rising
Fandom: Dr. Who
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: G
Characters: OFCs, Rose, Tenth Doctor
Words: 355
Summary: Sometimes one must listen to the signs and portents.
Notes: Just a weird little thing the moon the other night inspired. Reading weird moons used to be a thing I did.
The moon was a slice of orange low in the sky, dark clouds slipping in and out, painting eerie patterns across the surface.
Jade stood in the field, twisting her fingers as she watched Pearl work. Timorous by nature, every lunar image looked like a bad omen, and she despaired of ever learning the ancient craft of reading moons. She could only hope that by working with Pearl, the greatest moon reader in the village, she would one day be skilled enough to take a place of honor among the seers.
“Look, Jade,” Pearl beckoned, motioning up at the sky. “Do not think, look. Wipe your mind of all thoughts and feel what the moon has to say to you. If you practice listening, eventually you will be able to hear.”
Jade nodded, hoping ‘eventually’ meant no one would be in a hurry. She was a slow learner, and people had been impatient with her for not picking things up immediately all her life. Pearl didn’t seem like that type, though. Everyone praised her as an excellent teacher. Jade tried to put her nervousness aside and focus on the exciting opportunity. She knew the worry did her no favors, but it was easier said than done.
She watched with the newcomers as Pearl raised her hands to the sky, gaze fixed on the vision above. No one made a sound. All were awaiting the decision.
Pearl’s arms abruptly dropped, and she turned to them with a smile. “This moon promises good favor. You will be allowed to visit with us,” she informed their guests. “Jade will show you to the palace.”
“Thank you,” Rose told her.
The Doctor was silent, giving the moment the reverence it deserved. Or it could have been Rose’s hand in his, fingers digging into his flesh in silent warning.
Men did not speak on this planet unless given leave to talk. They had passed the first hurler, but now it would be up to the Priestess to approve of him. Or not.
If not, there would probably be a lot of running involved.
Good thing Rose was used to that.
The end
