Title: Wolf's One Hope
Fandom: 10th Kingdom
Author: Apache Firecat
Rating: PG/K+
Word Count: 300
Characters/Pairings: Wolf, past Wolf/Virginia
Warnings: Post-Movie
Summary: There is hope, but not the kind for which he longs.
"Wolves mate for life." He remembered not only telling his mate those promising words but also recalled, with vividness, his grandfather and even his great grandfather also telling his grandmother and great grandmother those very things. Such had always been passed down the line in his clan. One generation after another had always known that they were supposed to only mate once, but perhaps, Wolf thought, looking around him underneath the full moonlight, he should not have spoken so hastily with synecdoche for as hard as it was to believe, looking around him, he could see that several wolves had taken other mates.
There were those whose mates had been slain, and also several who, like he himself, had found with the most cruel twists of fate that the shepherdesses to whom they had devoted themselves quite simply did not feel the same. It seemed impossible to think such, but he could plainly see that some of the wolves who had tried to mate with humans had returned to their own kind. He scratched a temple, murmuring to himself, "Huff puff!"
He wanted none but Virginia, but Virginia had never wanted him. She had sought his assistance in saving her father, herself, and even their worlds, but she had never truly loved him. He had tried so hard too, even procuring her that remarkable wedding ring who had long since been lost into the sea. She had never loved him. He knew that now and had been drowning his sorrows in one keg of ale and lamb after another, but looking around himself now... Perhaps there was hope after all.
He sank back onto his haunches and howled for of course, the greatest problem with hope was that no matter what hope might offer, he still only wanted the one.
