Summary: Sometimes brightness still leads to darkness.
"Jubilation Lee -- "
The ice cold voice snapping suddenly and directly behind her ear made Jubilee jump. She had led the X-Men on a couple of battles and faced many of their villains on her own over her years with them before she ever came to this dump. She had even faced down Sabertooth once, and her very first mission with the X-Men had been saving Wolverine's life. She had since saved this team on more than one occasion and even freed herself from Bastion's clutches. Yet nothing, somehow, scared her more than the icy tone now speaking down to her.
" -- what are those egregious doodlings on your test paper? I should give you a zero just for drawing such hideous things on your paper."
"Hum, if you'll check the questions, the answers're right, Frostie." She refused to acknowledge the fact that she had swallowed her own wad of bubblegum when Emma had spoken to her.
"I should -- "
"Aw, cut th' kid some slack, Em. We've all been through a tough time lately. At least look at 'er paper."
Emma sighed, but Jubilee had to bite the inside of her lip to keep from grinning. Cassidy was always on her side. Although some of her classmates had tried to say it was because they were both former X-Men, she knew better. Irish had a soft spot for Emma, but he, more so than even the rest of them, knew what a hard ass she could be. Shooting him a grin of appreciation but not daring to speak a word, Jubilee held up her paper to Emma.
Emma's eyes darted over her test. "Very well," she announced just as the clock struck the hour. "Pencils down." She snatched the paper out of Jubilee's hand, then moved to collect the rest of them as her students bolted. "Do not forget that the actual test will be tomorrow, first thing in the morning."
She heard several grumbles but dismissed them all as she walked to her desk. She felt Sean's startling bright, emerald green eyes on her back as she stacked the papers. "Did you have to undermine me like that in front of the students?"
"Ack, Em, ye could relax sometime, ye knae. This isn't th' life o' death part o' our job."
She laid the papers evenly upon the center of her desk before turning to level a cold glower at him. "No, but it could be. We never know which element of information they might partake from our lectures that might actually save their lives one day, Cassidy." She moved away to pour herself another cup of bitter coffee as Sean moved closer.
Glancing down at Jubilee's drawings and wondering if Emma knew how truly egregious they were, as by the old standards of the word, he commented, "I t'ink ye underestimate our children, Em. They're brighter'n ye give 'em credit for."
"So were my first." Her words are a breathy whisper, but hearing her, he argued no more.
