Title: An Impartial Evaluation
Fandom: Fire Emblem Three Houses
Author:
elidelio
Rating: G
Word Count: 291
Characters/Pairings: Hubert/Ferdinand if you squint
Summary: What does Hubert think about Ferdinand? It’s quite simple, really…
If a few years ago one had asked Hubert for an honest assessment of the Emperor's retainer, Ferdinand Von Aegir, the result probably would have been a rather biting comment on his woefully pointless seditious ambitions, his misguided supercilious attitude borne of his noble status, and his hopeless obsession with superficial posturing.
However, if one were to ask the same question now…
While Hubert would, for the most part, stick with the spirit of his initial criticisms, he would have to concede that working closely with Ferdinand during the past few years of the war had made him see the man in a different light. This was in part due to Ferdinand’s own growth during the time, but also due to Hubert's own deconstruction of his rather harsh initial judgement—though he would be loath to admit this even to himself.
Ferdinand’s pointless sedition became a desire to push his limits, his supercilious attitude mellowed into an unrivalled sense of honour, an his penchant for posturing peeled back it's layers to reveal a type of relentless optimism Hubert had never seen on anyone else before.
Although they were still opposites in almost every sense of the word, he had to recognise that their camaradic rivalry brought out the best in each other more often than not. Even Edelgard felt confident with their combined might by her side, noting the two of them complemented each other in an oddly perfect way with their starkly contrasting ways of approaching new challenges.
As far as Hubert was concerned, however, Ferdinand still had much room for growth—and he made sure to tell him so too, every time they met for one of their regular chats over coffee and tea.
