Summary: His disgust urges him to hate those who perpetuate this flawed system.
All of Unovan society--indeed, all of society, in general--has fallen prey to a terrible fallacy. A formula that simply doesn't work, though the public's been fooled into thinking otherwise. They're trapped in an exploitative system that they accept as perfectly normal and fine.
Trainers snatching up Pokémon left and right. Forcing them into slavery. Hurting them, for the sake of entertainment. They drive their Pokémon mercilessly, drawn by the meretricious lure of Gym Badges and titles.
It's a disgrace. It turns N's stomach. His disgust urges him to hate those who perpetuate this flawed system.
But his interactions with Hilda...they're of a different caliber. Unexpected. She's as trapped in the formula as other Trainers are, but...somehow, N can't bring himself to summon any contempt for her.
Oddly, Hilda seems more the salt of the earth. Kindhearted, and protective of her Pokémon. When N first meets her, she holds her Oshawott close, ignoring the way its small claws dig into her blouse. It's strangely cute, the gentle way that she cradles it. As though the little Pokémon, rather than an object, is treasured and loved.
For the first time, everything that seemed true before now appears clouded.
N never expected a variable like Hilda to exist in the formula. The more he sees her, the more Hilda becomes an object of fascination in N's eyes. She maintains that kindly aura, even as she steadfastly stands in the way of Team Plasma's goals. The way that she presses on persistently, pushes herself toward her dreams, is impressive.
Are there other Trainers out there like her? Caring deeply for their Pokémon, instead of simply using them?
For the first time, N begins to wonder if it isn't the system that's flawed, so much as the ideology that he's been taught to trust in.
