Crowley walked into the building reluctantly, his dragging feet while being pushed on by the two women who flanked either side of him. Scowling on principle, he stalked up to the desk.

"I, uh, I'm here for a pet," he stated, tasting the unfamiliar word carefully. He wasn't sure why he'd let Maggie and Nina (mostly Maggie) talk him into it. It was coercion, is what it was. No matter that no threats had been involved. He hadn't agreed to any of this. And it wasn't because of Maggie's blond hair and sweet disposition, either. It definitely wasn't because he was lonely.

He was a bit bored these days, though, so it was okay for a lark.

"Of course," the woman behind the desk smiled at him. "I'm Kelly, and I'll be happy to assist you. What kind do you want?"

Crowley raised his brows. "Uh…"

"No worries, we'll figure it out. Come with me," Kelly said, rising.

The trio followed Kelly through a door and were immediately bombarded with a cacophony of barking. She had obviously decided Crowley looked like a dog person.

One particularly loud dog yipped and jumped against the cage Crowley stood beside. He stepped back.

"Bennie is a febrile little stinker," she explained fondly. "He does have a lot of energy and a bit of a nervous disposition, but he's very loving."

"Uh… I live in a flat." And he decided then and there that he didn't want anything noisy.

Deducing this customer wasn't a 'dog person' after all, Kelly directed them through another door, this time to the cat room.

It was a lot quieter. Almost peaceful, or that was compared to the racket next door. Crowley made his way down the cages, eyes behind his sunglasses taking everything in. He abruptly stopped at a cage where two cats slept, curled around each other.

One black and one white. A dichotomy, appearing as opposites yet clearly a matched set.

"What's the story with them?" he asked Kelly.

"Sadly, their owner passed away. They're quite bonded, but it can be difficult to adopt pairs out toge---"

"I'll take them," Crowley growled.

"Oh, I'm sorry," she said, " but only the black one is available. The white one was just chosen by someone filling out the paperwork now."

Chosen, without free will to decide their fate, split apart against their will and facing a lonely existence without each other.

Crowley followed Kelly's gaze and saw a woman sitting at a table diligently working on a form. He strolled purposefully over to the stranger. "You want a kitten," he murmured into her ear.

The woman looked at him in askance. "Oh, thank you, but I've already chosen the white one over there."

A subtle snap of fingers changed her mind. "No, you want a younger one."

A transformation came over the woman's face as she blinked slowly. "Of course. I want a kitten. I don't know what I was thinking."

Crowley took the paper and ripped it up, then returned to the others, two of whom were looking at him suspiciously, the other expectantly. "She changed her mind," he stated. "I'll take them both."

"Oh, um, that's great. There are just a few forms to fill out."

"Fine."

"What are you going to call them?" Nina asked.

"Huh?"

"They probably already have names," Maggie guessed.

"Well, you're free to rename them, of course," Kelly told him. "The previous owner called them angel kitty and demon kitty."

"Of course." Crowley wasn't even surprised.

"You'll be giving them new names, then?" Nina inquired with a smirk.

"We'll see," Crowley answered distractedly, his gaze never leaving the entwined cats. Wondering how he could possibly adopt these two – yet how he could not?

And if the two felines reminded him in any way of two human-shaped supernatural beings, it was entirely coincidental.
