#085 Symbiotic - Moonlight (TV) - Not So Lost Causes
Title: Not So Lost Causes
Fandom: Moonlight (TV)
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG-13
Words: 540
Characters/Pairing: Josef Kostan, Shane Alexander (vampire OC). Implied OT3.
Summary: Shane is in Seward to participate in a marathon. Josef is there to check out the scenery – no, not the nature kind. ;)
Notes: Brief reference to offscreen, past SA. This fic idea came to me while watching a video on the disappearance of Michael LeMaitre, who went missing while participating in the Mount Marathon race in Seward Alaska, in 2012. My Moonlight series HB takes place partially in the fictitious town of Resurrection, Alaska, which I've placed near Fairbanks. The name of my town was inspired by seeing Resurrection Bay on a map. Since the bay is located at Seward, it seemed fitting.
It was nearly 60 degrees, the upper limit of the average for Seward, Alaska, in July. The weather was perfect for the upcoming race; it was sunny with a slight breeze, although some unexpected rain the night before meant the ground would be slightly wet and slippery.
Par for the course; getting muddy and banged up was part of the experience of the yearly Mount Marathon race. For most participants, that is.
"You're very weird, you know that, right?" Josef commented, taking more than a casual interest in watching Shane limber up with stretching exercises that really weren't necessary.
Shane's extreme lengths at blending in were always entertaining, so Josef was on hand as a spectator to an event he wouldn't have been caught undead at under other circumstances.
"Any specific reason why? I mean, this particular time?" Shane asked with an arched eyebrow as he did a few leg lunges. It wasn't the first time Josef had told him that; they both knew it wouldn't be the last.
"Uh," Josef yanked his attention back to the conversation from where it had been distracted by how the spandex shorts clung to Shane's body. "You're a vampire," he responded, voice pitched low. "What's the challenge in doing a human marathon?"
"None."
"Then why?"
"It might have to do with…a bet, "Shane mumbled the last part.
Josef's ears perked up. "What was that?"
"I was drunk on Randy's moonshine at the time," the blond vamp defended himself. "Everyone was discussing the race, and one thing led to another… If I finish in the top three, the money collected will go to charity."
"Fascinating."
"Thanks, Spock. It's for a good cause, for the new rape crisis center opening in Fairbanks."
The words sobered Josef, and the decision to take part in the race up a mountain over four hundred miles away now made more sense. The wounds from what had happened to Sara were still tender. It had staggeringly far-reaching consequences for the three of them, both bad and, surprisingly, some good.
Shane approached vampires' relationship with humans very symbiotically. A give and take, mutually beneficial, even if most of the humans didn't know it existed. He accepted them with all their flaws and inferiority, and living among them gave him an oddly endearing touch of humanity. Whereas Josef's idea of symbiotic was humans providing the blood and vampires letting them live.
Certain unique company excluded, of course, Josef acknowledged, thinking of Sara and Beth.
"You and your Causes," he eventually said with a head shake.
"You were one of my lost causes," Shane reminded, pecking him on the end of his nose to be annoying.
Josef ignored the public (and embarrassing) PDA by force of will. "You do have an unfair advantage." Not that he was opposed to a bit of cheating.
"Not entirely. I have to judge carefully how quickly to finish, ensuring it's fast enough to place in the top three but not too fast to be humanely possible. Make sure I'm covered in enough mud to look believable," Shane added with a grin.
Josef gave him a long, slow appreciative look up and down. "Come see me after," he said. "I could go for a bit of mud wrestling."
