Title: Chrysanthemum
Fandom: Gervase Fen detective series - Edmund Crispin
Length: 300
Rating: Gen
Prompt: Garrulous
Summary: Professor Fen and a murder suspect are on a boat landing at Saint Paul's Wharf.
“I fear I am playing to type,” said Gervase Fen apologetically. “The garrulous Oxford don quoting Shakespeare and being tedious. Talking too much and being a bore.”
“On the contrary, I was flattered,” confessed his young companion as their vessel landed at Saint Paul’s wharf. “I’ve read your chronicles, of course, Professor Fen, and it is said you like to stick close to your murderers until the very end. I am supposing that you are supposing that I killed my betrothed Admiral Sawyer for his disgraceful conduct with that Nipponese geisha when he was docked in Nagasaki. It was thrilling, to think I, Chrysanthemum Cobbler of Smelting-on-the-Wode, could be considered the perpetrator of a such a hot-blooded act.”
“You either read too many detective stories, my dear, or not enough because if you did read my chronicles with any care whatsoever, you would know that I do not believe in the crime passionnel—oh, my fur and whiskers!”
Fen froze.
“Oh, how exciting. To hear you say your famous catchphrase. I shall have so much to write in my diary tonight.”
“—no, no, look, through the fog.”
“Ah, that must be Temple Gardens, it is a glorious bed of my name-sake flower, shining through the gloom.”
“Your full name is Chrysanthemum?”
“Well, you don’t think I was christened ‘Sandy’ do you?”
“I hadn’t given it much thought, but if that is the case, then you can’t possibly be the murderer.”
“Oh, what a pity. Well, it was nice while it lasted.”
“Come, let’s hurry off this blasted boat and to the garage where I’ve got Lily Christine III stabled. There may just be time to prevent a second murder.”
“I shall have to buy another diary!” sighed Sandy happily.
“Crispin might lend you his for all he’s using it.”
