Title: With a Bang and a Whimper
Fandom: Good Omens
Author: Cat Moon
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley

Summary: The rumors get more specific, but denial is survival.

July 16, 1945:

Aziraphale and Crowley stood side by side, as they so often did, watching the tableau of history play out in front of them. Both had been warned by their respective sides to sit this one out, but they had each found themselves drifting across the pond with an urge to bear witness.

"Should be a spectacular show," Crowley murmured as they waited for the bomb's detonation.

Aziraphale suppressed a shudder. "All that destructive potential… I feel they don't really understand what they're unleashing."

Crowley scoffed. "Do they ever? Too clever for their own good, sometimes."

The angel didn't comment, uncomfortably aware that humans could very well be sowing the seeds of their own demise. "Why do you suppose we aren't to interfere?" he asked instead.

"I expect humans are about to outdo themselves all on their own," Crowley posited.

Nothing was to be said to that, so they continued their vigil.

Eventually, Aziraphale cleared his throat. "It's come to my attention that there's a rather salacious bit of gossip going around in heaven." His tone of voice implied it was quite brazenly audacious.

"You know me, I'm always up for a bit of heavenly gossip," Crowley said as he put his sunglasses on in preparation for the upcoming burst of light.

"It's… it's about us," Aziraphale murmured, casting his eyes downward even though Crowley wasn't looking at him. "They're saying we, that we're… um, an item. Involved," his emphasis implied much more than just a business association. Or friendship.

The silence stretched on without a laugh of amusement or a snort of denial. Not even a gasp of shock. When it was almost to breaking, the demon finally responded. "Well, I wouldn't pay it any mind, Angel. We know the truth."

Aziraphale gazed at Crowley's profile, noting how his eyes never once shifted towards him.

"Yes. We know the truth."
