Title:Charmolypi
Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (ACD)
Rating: Gen
Length: 200
Summary: Watson considers himself fortunate.
The book slipped from my hand, fell to the rug, and cracked like an egg. I stooped to retrieve it, and my eye was arrested by a single pencil mark underlining a word.
charmolypi
I also recognised in the margin a scrawled hand I knew better than my own.
from the Greek, joy out of sadness, sadness out of joy
I stood very still in the centre of the sitting room with the book in my hand and considered the word and its definition. Though the word itself had been unknown to me, what it meant, I realised, was instantly recognisable.
While suffering with the sorrow and grief of Holmes’ death at the Reichenbach Falls, I had had the love and comfort of my wife Mary to sustain me, and when suffering from the sorrow and grief of Mary’s death, I now had the love and comfort of a resurrected Holmes to sustain me.
Many people might consider my life to be an unfortunate one, blighted by catastrophe and loss, but when viewed thusly, I saw myself as singularly fortunate, indeed, to have found happiness in the midst of sadness.
I placed the book on the shelf and continued unpacking.
